This mountain bike loop starts from the Taormina cable car station and offers a dynamic mix of coastal views, river landscapes, and cultural landmarks. Ideal for well-trained cyclists, it combines steady climbs and smooth descents along a route shaped by both nature and history.
The ride begins by skirting the Ionian Sea, with stunning views of the iconic Isola Bella, before reaching the lively bay of Giardini Naxos — the first Greek settlement in Sicily. After crossing the town, the route heads inland toward Calatabiano, dominated by its striking Arab-Norman castle that watches over the valley.
From here, the landscape changes dramatically. The path climbs along the Alcantara River, immersing cyclists in a terrain sculpted by volcanic forces. One of the highlights of the itinerary is the Alcantara Gorges — a spectacular basalt canyon formed by the meeting of ancient lava flows and water, with vertical walls reaching up to 50 meters.
Continuing through the valley, cyclists arrive in Francavilla di Sicilia, a quiet mountain village perfect for a break and a refreshing granita. The ascent resumes gradually, leading to a little-known architectural gem: the Cuba of Santa Domenica, a rural chapel with Arab-Byzantine origins dating back over a thousand years.
The final stretch climbs up to Castiglione di Sicilia, perched on a ridge and surrounded by vineyards. Here, the medieval Lauria Castle rewards cyclists with expansive views of Mount Etna and the surrounding valley. The return to Taormina is a long, scenic descent that follows the curves of the river, closing the loop with satisfaction and serenity.
